Azim Premji, founder of Wipro, one of the country’s leading IT companies, has turned 78 today. Azim Premji was born on 24 July 1945 in Mumbai. His father Mohammad Hussain Premji also carried forward his father’s business. There was not much profit in the rice business. The losses were increasing. When he took over the business after his father’s death, he tried his hand in many other businesses. In the year 1977, he changed the name of the company to Wipro. Today Wipro is the third largest IT company in the country.

Education of Azim Premji

After completing his school education, Azim Premji went to America to study engineering from Stanford University. However, shortly before he graduated in 1966, his father died suddenly and he had to return home to take control of the business (he had completed his engineering studies in 2000). Azim Premji took over his father’s business in 1966 at the age of 21. At that time the company mainly worked in Hydrogenated oil manufacturing. Soon after assuming control, Premji began looking for diversification opportunities and attempted to expand the business beyond refined oils. The company soon diversified its portfolio to include bakery fats, cosmetics, light bulbs, hair care products and hydraulic cylinders. Since the company no longer dealt only with vegetable products, Premji changed its name to “Wipro” in 1977.

Azim Premji Foundation is a non-profit organization, which has been working with the primary education system in rural government schools since the year 2000. The Foundation has implemented various programs to improve educational quality across the country. But by 2010, it had become clear that working on a “project” mode would not suffice and that any deep change would require sustained efforts over several decades, which could only be achieved by setting up “institutions”.
